English Camp at Payao

On Friday, we went an hour and a half north to a school there. Over the course of the day, we rotated approximately 120 students through 4 different stations. With the recent rescue of the 13 Thai boys from the cave, our teacher dream team- Connie, Char, Elaine, & Michelle with Ghan- planned our lessons around that. We started that morning with a song from our recent VBS, then Connie and Ghan gave an introduction. From there, we separated into stations.

The first station, led by Michelle with translation by Wan and assisted by Titus & Beverly, talked about teams/sports. Bringing five vocabulary words: kindness, patience, discipline, teamwork, and dedication. The kids were also encouraged to choose a vocab word to insert into the sentence "Being a team player teaches us ___________."

The next station, led by Elaine with translation by Wee and assisted by Alyse and Pastor Kim, talked about Heroes. This station brought another set of vocab words: courageous, selfless, leaders, communicators, and humble. Again, the children were encouraged to put a vocab word in a sentence- "Heroes are ________."

The third station was led by Connie with Ghan translating and assisted by Eric and myself, taught the kids about rescue equipment. Ambulance, helicopter, oxygen tank, scuba mask, and head lamp being the vocab words. "A/An ____________ can be used to help people." was their sentence.

Finally, the fourth station was led by Char, with Luka translating and Brittney and Mark assisting. This station taught about health. Their vocab words/phrases were eating healthy, exercising, sleeping, washing hands, and positive attitude. Again, the kids were encouraged to choose a vocab word/phrase and put it in a sentence- "I can stay healthy by _____________."

Our time with these kids was precious. We loved being able to work with them. We were able to leave some sporting equipment with them. We also gave them notebooks and pens at the beginning of the day that they were able to keep. When we were preparing to leave and saying good bye, the kids asked for us to write their names in their notebooks. And as we pulled away, they lined the balcony and driveway, waving good bye with big smiles. Our hearts were full and we pray that someday they realize that what they saw in us that day was not us, but Jesus!!
